The longer I practice law in Baltimore County, the more joy I get from the collegiality of my Bar Association colleagues. In so many ways we are one big family. To paraphrase John Donne, no one is an island. Each of us is a part of the whole, a part of the main. When the bell tolls for any of us, it tolls for all of us. That is why it hurts so much when we lose one of our own. We all try to find ways to deal with the pain of loss differently, to rage against the unfairness of those taken before their time.
Last August many of us joined together at Rocky Point for fellowship and to raise money to support the fight against pancreatic cancer in honor of Judge S. Ann Brobst who was in the midst of her year-long battle against this cruel disease. Judge Brobst joined us at the Purple Swim and spent the whole day thanking every donor and every swimmer and inspiring all of us by her fortitude.
Judge Brobst’s heart, soul and mind never stopped fighting, but on December 17, 2012, her body could take no more. This year we swim in her memory and in the memory of too many others we have loved and lost. We swim in honor and support of those still fighting. Please join me and many other members of the Baltimore County Bar Association so that we can in some small way shake our fists and refuse to surrender to the cruelty of a heartless random killer. This year’s swim will be on
August 4th, again at beautiful Rocky Point. If you would like to participate in the Purple Swim as a swimmer or as a donor, please go to www.purpleswim.org and go to the ONE Towson-BATC team. Swimmers have the option of swimming one or two miles and I will help train anyone who wishes to “go for it.”
